Now many will wonder, why slash the Beatles? Why on god's earth would anyone want to "defile" the names of the world's greatest musicians. It's heresy I tell you! Heresy!!! Well, first of all, the Beatles are not a religion, though many may think that the whole "Beatle Way" is and may live their lives accordingly. Many may even doubt our loyalty to the lads because we choose to write about them taking part in homosexual relationships with each other and sometimes even other men. What could be more wrong than that?!?
Well, here is the thing. We never claim that any of this is true. That's why it is called FICTION! We never say that what we write really happened, that would be slanderous.
But again, they ask, "why slash?" Well, this is why. The Beatles were, and always will be, a group of men linked together for all eternity. Their bond was one that lasted for over a decade, and even after their break up the four lads were always in contact with one another, whether it be through friendly or hostile means. Their relationship with each other was one that most of us would hope to share with our own friends, a deep respect and affection that was shared between four remarkable men. Many of course simply labeled it as a heterosexual friendship, and nothing more.
Now, here is the thing. In interviews, books, lyrics, etc. one would always notice a little hint of something else. John calling Paul his soulmate in his interviews with Rolling Stone, Beatle-experts citing the Lennon/McCartney meeting as one in which two people fall in love for the first time, Ringo admitting to spooning with George on Leno, John writing pro-gay poems for the Gay Liberation book, Paul talking about the beauty of John's hands in his biography, and so many more. As a slasher, finding little bits of evidence like this is akin to finding a pot of gold. For us, slashing the Beatles is building on things that we already see, perhaps showing Beatle fans everywhere that maybe they lads could've been closer than most people think that they could be. I mean, there sure is enough evidence out there. However, this does not mean that what we say is at all true, it's pure speculation and theory on our part. But what we say may hold a small modicum of truth to it. Perhaps not the way we tell it, but who knows? Besides, slashing pretty boys is always fun.
To Our Detractors
The following was written in response to an e-mail that was sent to an attacker of the Beatle slash site, Abbeyway, and this is what I had written to the BeatleSlash list. Call it a rant if you will.
You know, it both saddens and angers me when I read the many flames that anti-slashers write, but more often than not, I am just left absolutely depressed by the abject idiocy of our detractors. It must be the tendency for people to shoot off their mouths first, without actually thinking of what they're saying and writing. Or perhaps, thought is truly their biggest handicap, their "thoughts" and "beliefs" leading them down the path of stupidity.
I read what anti-slashers in almost any fandom say, "IT"s SiK! U gGuyzz are LAMEE!!1!!111111 i haaate uuuuuuu!!!" and then I think, why would anyone ever want to come down on something when they lack the requisite skills of spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Granted the writer of this recent e-mail wasn't too bad, but still, you know that most of them are.
I guess, I just don't get them. Would they rather have the lads screw nameless, imaginary women, people the "authors" create in their own likeness? Isn't that bad in its own right? They're making themselves out to be groupies! And all it is is about the sex, nothing else. What we do is so much more. Yes, we write about the Beatles "fucking" each other. But if the anti-slashers would just see past that, they'd see that what most of us is do is expand on relationships and feelings that may already be there. We're not defiling their name nor are we disrespecting them as people. We show people that there are just so many means by which the boys could've been close, sharing love and creating long lasting relationships and friendships, ones that are not limited by homophobia and closed mindedness. It's not like we ever claim that what we write is real. Like all fiction, it's just that, FICTION! You'd think that they'd get that, haha.
Not true Beatles fans? Au contraire, we probably know more about them than the anti-slashers, because we pay attention to ever nuance of their lives. We have to to find the subtext lurking behind every song, every interview, every meaningful look passed over a shared mic.
